Beginning Teacher Assistance Program (BTAP) Guidelines
Professional Requirement: Participation in New Teacher Induction
All Missouri teachers must complete a BTAP prior to applying for the career continuous teaching certification. The guidelines represent legislation that has been implemented specifically to ensure that early career teachers receive the critical supports they need to be successful. Research continually showcases evidence of early career induction supports in relationship to teacher retention. These guidelines represent legislative protections for early career teachers to make sure they continue to receive the supports necessary for their success in the profession. These guidelines protect new teachers by giving them the right to learn. The guidelines intend for the BTA to be developed with support from teacher preparation programs and delivered through associations and the RPDC system. While some school districts have partnerships with universities and/or other approved BTAP providers, the majority of school districts are not approved providers of BTA programming.
MTDS Emerging A is the state model for BTA and exceed the requirements of the current BTAP guidelines. Programs are offered throughout Missouri through Regional Professional Development Centers.

What do I need to know about mentoring requirements?
MTDS Mentor/BTAP A Coaching/Mentoring
All new teachers are required to have two years of mentoring supports. Districts will assign new teachers a mentor. The mentoring guidelines promote the creation of mentoring consortiums, and MTDS programs provide this structure for new teachers. In addition to their district assigned mentor, new teachers will have the opportunity to work with regional mentors during paired program days (if offered). MTDS Teacher Development Specialists may serve as mentors for both new teachers and Mastering level teacher mentors.
Mentor training is offered for teachers through: Foundations of Coaching & Mentoring |
New teachers should have at least 4 opportunities to observe master teaching!Observations can be of multiple teachers and do not have to be of the mentor teacher. The mentor teacher should meet with and/or observe the new teacher for at least 4 class periods. This time includes reflective conversations and providing support. Ideally the new teacher would be given many opportunities to observe excellent teachers across the entire year. |
